As I have to give my old plot up in the Autumn I decided to transplant a clump of leeks.

I watered them liberally before digging them up. Actually the water didn't seep through very much. I left plenty of soil around the well developed roots. I watered them again to make sure the soil was soft.

I was able to tease the roots apart by shaking as much soil off as possible and gently teasing them apart. I found the best way to do this was by dividing in half each time. That way the roots hardly suffered.

I spread a few out at a time so that I could pop them straight in the dibbed holes. I found the best way to get them into the holes was to dib the holes much deeper than I needed.

I could then spin the leeks gently in my fingers whilst putting them in the holes and then lifting them up a bit. This made the roots stay below the leek in the hole.

I then watered them in even though it was raining.
